SOLA SALON STUDIOS TWIN CITIES SPOTLIGHT - Q&A WITH TARA IMHOLTE
1. How did you decide to be a hairstylist?
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved doing hair. From coloring with KoolAid and trying to cut shapes into friends' hair in elementary school, to helping friends with hair and makeup for dances or ice skating shows in highschool, I always had a passion for doing hair. It's so amazing to be able to do what I love for a career.
2. How many years of experience do you have in the industry?
3. What do you like most about your career?
I love being able to be creative and to constantly learn new techniques and skills. I love working with people and being able to build relationships with my guests. I go through major life events with them through the years, all while being able to make them look and feel good.
4. What was it like to transition from commission to having your own studio at Sola?
It was a scary jump to make, but I am so glad I did! I had never rented before so everything was new but it was fun and exciting to learn new aspects of the business.
5. What is the biggest change from a traditional salon?
To me, it is all about the freedom. The freedom to create the environment I want for my clients to experience, the freedom to be in charge of my own schedule, and the freedom to create a better balance in my life.
6. What is the most rewarding aspect of business ownership for you?
Being able to be in control of all parts of my studio salon and my guests' experience.
7. What do you like most about Sola?
I love how much support I get at Sola. Going into this, I thought that I would be entirely on my own for education, training, etc. I was so surprised to see how much education they bring in for stylists. They are always there if you need anything. I also love my relationships I have built with my Sola neighbors. It is like working with others in a salon and then being able to have your own private space.
8. What do your clients think about your space?
Everyone has loved the space. They love the intimacy you can have in the studio. They love being able to see how I have designed the space to represent my style.
9. How has being in business for yourself at Sola helped your career move forward?
Being with Sola has made it possible for me to start my own studio salon without all the hassles that come with a traditional salon. I can focus on my clients and business rather than the small details of traditional businesses.
10. How has selling your own retail enhanced the service that you provide your guests?
I am glad to be able to find products that I believe in, and that follow my beliefs. I picked out a hair care line that was not only sulfate and paraben free but also crulety free.
11. What is unique about your business, Style Me?
I specialize in color. At my previous salon, I worked as the Creative Color Director. I have continued to set myself apart in the industry by making it a priority to get the best education available in the industry. I have traveled all over the country to learn from the best including Laurent Phillipon, Horst Rechelbacher, Howard McLaren, Tracy Cunningham, and Kim Vo. I love bringing back new techniques to my clients who want the latest in hair trends and also educating them on how to maintain the style at home.
