Give 100, Get 100: Attracting New Clients Without Taking Money Out of Your Own Pocket
Starting Your Career
Article summary:
As beauty professionals, we need clients to build a successful business. But why do so many of us feel the need to offer a discount just to bring them in? Let's be honest, a good portion of the clients who come in for a discounted service are there for the discount, not necessarily looking for their new beauty home. So what can we do to attract new clients without taking money out of our own pockets?
Be Available
This might sound old school, but availability is one of the most overlooked ways to grow a client base. Not every client can book between 9 and 3 on a weekday. Expanding your hours can open the door to an entirely new pool of clients. Someone might love your work and your content, but if your schedule doesn't work with theirs, they're likely to book with someone else who's more available, regardless of skill level.
Use Social Media Strategically
Your Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are some of the most powerful (and free) marketing tools available to independent beauty professionals. Share photos, reels, and catchy captions. Tag your clients, and encourage them to tag you and your studio back. Post to your stories consistently, and make sure your booking link or contact info is easy to find in your bio.
Build Your Network
One of the biggest advantages of working alongside other independent professionals is the built-in support system. At my Sola location, our group of Sola Professionals stays connected through a shared group chat. If someone's launching a new service, the rest of us can pass along referrals. If someone's booked solid and gets an inquiry they can't take, they refer it to someone else in the group. That kind of community, one of the reasons professionals choose Sola Salons in the first place, means we're never building alone.
Be Your Own Advertisement
You are your own walking business card. Vivid color, extensions, nail art, lashes, makeup, glass skin, lived-in blonde, or a great piece of branded merch- whatever you offer, wear it out in public. Most people are already people-watching hair, skin, nails, and style wherever they go. Give them something to notice. Stay social, and always have a business card or QR code linked to your booking page ready to hand off.
Be Open to Opportunities
Many beauty professionals have a niche or a specialty they love most, and that's a good thing. But staying open to services outside your top priority can pay off in ways you don't expect. I've been behind the chair for many years, and kids' haircuts have never been my favorite. Given the choice, I'd rather have an extension client in my chair. But saying yes to that one kid's haircut has, more than once, turned into a booking for mom, dad, grandma, or an aunt. You never know what one client can lead to; that same kid's haircut can grow into a highlight-and-weft client down the line.
The Bottom Line
This isn't about abandoning your boundaries or the kind of beauty professional you want to be. It's about expanding how we think about building our businesses. We put everything we have into what we offer, our skill, our time, our energy. So why should we settle for getting back only a portion of what that's actually worth? Independence gives you the freedom to build a business your way, without needing to compete on price. At Sola, that freedom comes with a built-in community of professionals ready to help each other grow.
