When I was 18-19, I was in college at Bemidji State studying Elementary Education. While I only lasted three semesters there, I realized it truly takes a special person to do that job. While I am incredibly patient, a part of me knew that was not the path for me.
While in college, I was always the friend who was doing my friends hair, whether it was curling, straightening, or box coloring (which I highly do not recommend now that I am properly educated)! When I decided to leave college, I was a bit lost, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life. My best friend was living in Mankato and I would go down to visit her a lot and she mentioned Cosmetology school. I was very interested, but needed some time to think about it. Eventually, I went and had an experience of a lifetime. I made some amazing friends who were going through the exact same thing I was and am grateful for the experience.
After graduating cosmetology school, in 2017, at Nova Academy-Mankato, I started working at a popular salon in the south metro, where I received loads of education! I find education to be incredibly important in the hair industry, especially after cosmetology school. In school we are taught the bare minimum/what we need to graduate. The basics, if you will.
As a Hairstylist, we need to be on top of what is trending so we can offer our best knowledge to our clients. The only way we can provide, is to continue educating ourselves as much as we possibly can!
I decided to open my own salon suite because I wanted my own space that is secluded to just my client and myself, to make it feel more of a personable experience. Working in a big salon, it can be hard to hear and stay focused solely on your client when there are so many louder voices and hairdryers being used around you. I wanted a warmer, quieter, and more welcoming environment!
I have been out of the industry for about a year and a half because I was feeling burnt out. Ever since I left, I have been wanting to get my hands back into hair full-time. Over that time I have been learning trending techniques to keep my mind refreshed.
Getting back into the industry was a very big decision. I was debating quite a bit on if I wanted to work for someone else or myself. I chose this path because I am a hard-worker and incredibly focused on my goals in life. This is my dream come true!
Thank you for taking the time to read this! I hope to see you soon!
